Interview with the ceo and co-founder of amareta

As the green beauty revolution continues to rise, consumers are constantly in search of the safest products for their skincare needs. As women, it is oftentimes challenging to find a product that caters to the hormonal changes of life.

We spend tons of money on skincare products because we want to take good care of our skin and achieve that natural glow—only to realize that as hormonal levels fluctuate, so does our skin. Through natural life changes, such as menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and menopause women want to remain confident and feel beautiful inside and out.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Claire Zhao, the CEO and Co-Founder of Amareta, a hormonal cycle-based beauty and wellness skincare line that syncs with the natural rhythm of women. This innovative brand offers safe beauty products that embrace the hormonal cycles of women and that are formulated with certified organic ingredients.

We asked Claire Zhao a few questions to learn more about this unique brand, and here is what she had to say.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started in the beauty business?

“I earned my Human Sciences degree at Oxford University and always had a passion focused on radical self-care, public health, and understanding a holistic approach to maintaining wellness. My passion specifically lies in how personal care relates to the beauty industry—physically, mentally, and/or emotionally. I have always been in the industry, helping organic brands with branding and marketing, and for the past three years, I have been helping brands launch in the Asian market. Ultimately, I want to help women go through their transitions in life while educating the industry on how skincare can assist in doing so.”

What inspired you to start your company and create your brand?

“From a product perspective, I noticed there was a gap in the market regarding organic, harmless products that could cater to the hormonal needs of women. From a brand perspective, I wanted to create a community where women can feel safe and embrace the changes that they are experiencing in life.”

“It’s not about covering up the changes, but supporting and embracing those changes and knowing there are products that can assist in these hormonal transitions.” -Claire Zhao

What makes your brand different from other beauty brands?

“Amareta’s concept is to curate products to complement hormonal changes in and with women. Because there are different phases of the hormonal cycle when high levels of estrogen are produced, we needed to create a product to complement these changes. Because of hormonal changes, our body temperature falls and circulation is lower, which causes complexion issues such as dull skin. Our products are tailored to these skin needs during this time.

We make sure our products are very safe for all customers including expecting mothers and their babies. We work with APA, American Pregnancy Association, and they screened all the ingredients during product development. We also spoke with the expert group of APA for about a year while curating the thirteen SKU’s currently available.

“As women, we need to become more familiar with hearing our own body rhythm and paying attention to the signs in our body.” -Claire Zhao

What is your most unique product and why?

“Our most unique product is the Moon Light  Brightening Gel Cleanser for hormonal dullness, sensitivity, and hyperpigmentation. It has ingredients high in antioxidants that gives skin a glowing and refreshed complexion and contains vitamin C, offering a hydrating effect. All of our SKU’s are made with safe ingredients that are basic but effective, not overwhelming to the skin.

My favorite is the Soft Cleansing Balm—it creates a milky texture when you wash and has a cranberry fiber for gentle exfoliation. It’s great for hydration and has antiseptic to calm skin sensitivity.”

Without giving away too many of your secrets (smile), what do you anticipate your growth to be next  year, and what is your direction for the future of the brand?

“We have two goals:

  • This year’s goal is to work with retail partners in beauty boutique stores or more mainstream retail to become more accessible to customers to offer a complete customer experience.
  • In doing so [the above goal], we want to build engagement with customers creating events and collaborating with other local brands to curate a safe community for women. This community will be to discuss skin and personal-care issues women may be experiencing. Some of the collaborations and events that we would like to hold will be with yoga studios in LA, to begin creating this community. We aim to capture these conversations, creating a platform (blog) while taking the necessary time to nurture this community of women.”

Finally, what gets you out of bed in the morning, and what is your daily motivation?

“The what: the purpose of the brand is to help women achieve and realize that they can be confident in their skin and still feel beautiful no matter the life changes they may be experiencing.

The why: To create a community. Serving people is my passion, and I want to continue to learn how I can better serve my employees, customers, and distributors by adding value through the products that we offer.”
