Interview with the Founder, Leilani Macedo, President of CLiCS

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started in the beauty business? 

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been obsessed with all things hair. As a young woman, I followed my passion and went to cosmetology school. Since then, I’ve worked in every position imaginable in the industry — as a receptionist, salon assistant, stylist, brand educator and finally, as a salon owner.  

 I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for 21 years and currently hold dual licensing in California and Nevada, as well as a Barbering license. In 2006 I became the owner of AurA Salon and spa, where I was the managing partner overseeing the day-to-day operations, hiring and training of staff, as well as marketing and sales. It was there that I attended the Aveda Business College and received training on business development and strategies, which helped make AurA one of the top salons in Reno, Nevada.

What inspired you to start your company and create your brand? 

As a stylist, one of my biggest frustrations and challenges was when a happy client came back to my chair and said, “Last time the color was perfect; do it like last time.” I couldn’t do it. I had difficulty producing the consistency my clients desired. Becoming a salon owner brought a new level of challenges, such as outdated hair color dispensing methods and expensive inventory management. After seeing product waste, profits–and sometimes clients–going down the drain, I knew I needed a solution.  

CLiCS hair color is formulated with nutrient-rich bacuri butter, a hydrating and replenishing natural ingredient often found in skin care—and now used to benefit hair.

What makes your brand different from other beauty brands? 

CLiCS (Color Lab Inventory Control System) is where artistry and innovation meet. We’ve created an industry-first custom hair color ecosystem that completely optimizes the way salons formulate, dispense and manage hair color. The computer-controlled dispensing platform allows hairdressers to create any shade of demi or permanent hair color with the touch of a button. The system measures, mixes and dispenses for you, taking all of the guesswork out of hair color. There’s no waste, no mess and no mistakes. It allows you to replicate your exact formula time and time again, so when the client wants her color ‘just like last time,’ you can deliver on that promise. For salon owners, there’s no need to manage a large inventory of color tubes. The CLiCS dispenser houses reusable canisters with a variety of shade options. When a canister runs low, the refillable canisters are replenished through an automated factory-direct system. We wanted to make it as easy, economical and seamless as possible for both the stylist and the business owner.  

What is your most unique product and why? 

CLiCS is not just a product–it’s a whole new category. There is nothing like it on the market. As the first-ever hair color ecosystem, CLiCS is a game changer, using today’s technology to truly optimize how we formulate, use and manage hair color. It’s hair color for the digital age.  

Without giving away too many of your secrets, (smile) — what do you anticipate your growth to be next  year and what is your direction for the future of the brand? 

 We are especially excited about Cosmoprof, as it will be our official industry launch. Right now we are developing strong industry partnerships that are not only focused on the product, but also on collaborative education. We truly value these relationships and want to ensure the success of all parties involved. This is why we’ve developed an ecosystem as opposed to just a color line — it goes that much further for us. We still have a limited number of salon partnerships available in 2018 and our reservation list is growing rapidly.   

Finally, what gets you out of bed in the morning — what is your daily motivation? 

Exploration. For me, the desire to learn, grow and push forward in an industry I love is what motivates me every day. Using technology to develop innovative tools that help stylists and salons achieve their dreams — what could be better than that?
